Given the rapid developments in educational technologies and the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of interactive platforms in educational systems has expanded significantly. However, there are still significant uncertainties about the effectiveness of these approaches on long-term learning retention compared to traditional methods. This article examined the findings of 443 empirical studies using a systematic review and meta-analysis. The results show that interactive platforms significantly increase engagement (with an effect size of g=0.85), improve immediate academic performance (with a mean score of 88.5 vs. 79.2), and increase learning retention in the short term. However, findings regarding long-term retention are inconsistent, with some studies suggesting that traditional methods may be more effective over longer time periods (more than one month). Also, the effectiveness of interactive platforms is strongly influenced by moderating variables such as gender (larger effect size for women), level of instructor control, type of content, and level of engagement.
